Summer Camp for children

Welcome to the next edition of our Folk Story Series - a collection of camps where students explore folktales from around the world, and create meaningful art through the lens of storytelling. Each week, students will be told a folk story from a different part of the world, and then create various art projects that celebrate the tale's themes.

Creating art by kids based on folk stories is important for several compelling reasons:

  1. Cultural Connection: Encouraging children to create art inspired by folk stories helps them establish a connection with their cultural heritage. It introduces them to the traditions, values, and history of their community or a specific culture.

  2. Creative Expression: Art offers children a medium for creative expression. Folk stories provide a rich source of inspiration for their imagination, enabling them to express their ideas, emotions, and interpretations.

  3. Storytelling Skills: When kids create art based on folk stories, they often delve deeper into the narrative, enhancing their storytelling skills. They learn how to convey a story visually, which is a valuable skill for communication.

  4. Critical Thinking: Interpreting folk stories and translating them into art requires critical thinking. Children analyze the themes, characters, and messages in the stories, fostering their ability to think critically and solve problems.

  5. Cultural Understanding: Art based on folk stories encourages children to explore and appreciate cultural diversity. It teaches them about different cultures, beliefs, and traditions, promoting tolerance and empathy.

  6. Boosting Confidence: Art projects based on folk stories can boost a child's confidence. When they see their ideas and creations take shape, it instills a sense of achievement and self-worth.

  7. Connection to Literature: Linking art to folk stories introduces children to literature in an engaging and interactive way. It reinforces the idea that stories can be brought to life through various artistic forms.

PROGRAMS OFFERED

Painting

If choosing painting for your summer camp activity, get ready for students to be immersed in a week of fun and colour! Painting classes will include working with watercolours and acrylic paints to create different paintings inspired by famous artists & artistic styles. Mixing colours, colour theory and opacity of paint colours are just some of the things we talk about and practice while in painting classes at summer camp.

Drawing

When choosing Drawing as your afternoon activity, teachers will run through essential drawing skills and different content each day to be able to allow all students to feel comfortable and also feel challenged throughout the week. Because there are all different things we like to draw the most, here at CCSA it is important for us to encourage our students to draw things that are also unusual for them, as it builds a well-rounded artist. Our teachers guide our students to create beautiful drawings that they can be proud of, while encouraging experimentation and exploration each day they are here.

Please note: Drawing is only offered as an afternoon activity

Architecture

As part of our Creative Camp, we offer a one-day architecture session where children are introduced to the basics of architecture. This session provides hands-on experience in creating real structures, cultivating sensible observation of the environment, and encouraging problem-solving through creativity. Key concepts such as drawing, design, and modeling are explored, preparing children to appreciate and contribute to their surroundings. Please note that Architecture is not offered as a full week activity, but rather as a component of our Creative Camp.

Sculpture

If choosing sculpting for your summer camp activity, get ready to explore a variety of different materials throughout the week! In sculpting classes, our favourite things to work with are clay, cardboard, wire and paper maché! You never know what to expect in a sculpting week here at camp, but you will know that it will be 100% fun! Sculpting classes at summer camp will help students understand how art can exist in a three-dimensional world and expand their young minds with unique tips & tricks to creating cool sculptures.

Animation

In our animation summer camp, students bring stories to life through the media arts. They study famous animations and learn storytelling techniques. Key concepts include design, visual effects, and life drawing. Students create storyboards, choose materials, and use stop-motion techniques. We encourage individual styles and show that perfection can be achieved in various ways.

Cartooning

Choosing cartooning for your summer camp activity gives students the freedom to be able to draw the entire day while they are at camp! Primarily creating characters and comics, cartooning is perfect for any child that loves to explore the world through drawing! Cartooning classes at camp usually explore storyboarding, character creation, comic book design & set design through various drawing and sculpting activities. Cartooning gives students the opportunity to tell their story while they are here at camp, the way they like to tell it!

Fashion

Our fashion design summer program fosters creativity and skill development. Students receive intensive, hands-on training tailored to their potential and taste. The curriculum covers fashion terminology, drawing, sewing, and more. We respect students' styles and show them diverse paths to perfection.

Drama

In our drama summer camp, students immerse themselves in performing arts, learning improvisation, character development, and stagecraft. They collaborate to create stories and characters under the guidance of their drama teacher. Each day, they practice and perform on stage. The camp culminates in a performance for parents.
